Used correctly, a blog can be one of the most effective ways to promote your business online. Company focused blogs can be used to post information and news about your business to current and potential customers. Over time, blogs can also be a great source of search engine traffic.

Anyone can build an effective blog. Even those who aren’t natural writers. Below are the steps I follow:

1. Give yourself time to write. I generally set aside 1-2 hours per article (more for in-depth articles). I’d suggest posting at least one article per week to begin with.

2. Develop a process. A process will push you along those times you aren’t feeling particularly inspired. My process is as follows:

  1. Decide what you want to talk about. Some people find it easier to start with the end in mind and then work backwords.
  2. Outline what you want to say. Just put down all the points you want to hit.
  3. Write a quick draft.
  4. Polish it. I’ll usually go over my draft a few times.
  5. Let it sit for a day. This will give you time to let the ideas settle in. I almost alway see things that I missed the next day
  6. Polish it some more. Refine the text
  7. Add photos and links to extra resources
  8. Publish. Be sure to add tags and categories if your blog supports them.
  9. Promote it.

3. Involve others. You can do this in a couple ways.

  • Bring in employees and colleagues to write about their expertise and what they do
  • Interview influential people in your niche

4. Give it time. You won’t see results for at least a month and until you have at least four or so articles. You’ll also get a lot better the more you do it.
